London to the Chilterns
The M40 begins at Denham on the western edge of London, crosses the M25 at junction 16 and passes Beaconsfield and High Wycombe before climbing through the Chiltern Hills at the Stokenchurch Gap, where the motorway runs through a deep cutting. Beaconsfield services (junction 2) is the first stop out of London.
Oxford, Bicester and Banbury
Beyond the Chilterns the M40 passes Oxford (junctions 8 and 9, with Oxford services at junction 8a), Bicester Village (junction 9), which draws heavy weekend traffic, and Banbury. Cherwell Valley services sits near junction 10. Junctions are well spaced here, so the driver location signs and the services are the easiest way to tell us where you are.
Warwick and the M42
The northern section runs past Warwick and Leamington, with Warwick services between junctions 12 and 13, and joins the M42 south of Birmingham at junction 3a. Traffic merging towards Birmingham and the M6 can be heavy at peak times.
If you break down on the M40: get onto the hard shoulder or as far left as you can, hazards on, and if it's safe get out by the left-hand door and wait behind the barrier. Then call us with the junctions either side of you and your direction.
