Across the north of England

The M62 starts on the eastern edge of Liverpool and runs east past Warrington, around the north of Manchester, over the Pennines, past Leeds and Wakefield and on to Goole, finishing at North Cave near Hull. It's one of the main freight routes between the ports on either side of the country, so expect plenty of lorries at any time of day.

Liverpool to Manchester (junctions 4–12)

The western section passes the M57 at Tarbock, then Burtonwood services and Warrington, where it crosses the M6 at the Croft interchange (junction 10). Between Warrington and Manchester it meets the M60 ring road at junction 12. This stretch carries heavy commuter traffic between the two cities as well as through traffic heading for Yorkshire.

Around Manchester with the M60 (junctions 12–18)

Around the north of Manchester the M62 and M60 share the same road, and the junction numbers follow the M60. This catches people out when they call for help. If you're on this section, tell us the M60 junction number you can see and whether you're heading towards Leeds or Liverpool, and we'll know exactly where you are.

Over the Pennines (junctions 18–24)

East of Birch services, the M62 climbs onto Saddleworth Moor and reaches about 1,220 feet at Windy Hill, the highest point of any motorway in England. Near junction 23 the carriageways split around Stott Hall Farm, and the motorway runs across the Scammonden Dam. Snow, ice, fog and strong crosswinds are common in winter, junctions are far apart, and there's very little shelter. If you break down up here, get behind the barrier, keep warm and call us as soon as you can.

West Yorkshire to Goole (junctions 24–38)

Coming down into West Yorkshire, the M62 passes Huddersfield and Brighouse, Hartshead Moor services, and the M606 to Bradford and M621 to Leeds. It meets the M1 at Lofthouse (junction 29) and the A1(M) at Ferrybridge (junction 33), where there are also services, then runs across flatter country past Goole to its end.

If you break down on the M62: get as far left as you can, onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, with your hazard lights on. Leave the vehicle by the left-hand door if it's safe and wait behind the barrier. If you can't get out safely, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999. Then call us with your junction, or the M60 junction around Manchester, and your direction.

Questions

M62 Breakdown FAQs

I've broken down on the M62 around Manchester, but the signs say M60. Where am I?

Between junctions 12 and 18 the M62 and the M60 share the same road, and the signs use M60 junction numbers. Tell us the junction number on the sign and whether you're heading towards Leeds or Liverpool, and we'll find you.

I've broken down on Saddleworth Moor in bad weather. What should I do?

Get yourself and any passengers out by the left-hand door and behind the barrier if it's safe, and take warm clothing with you. If you can't get out safely, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999. Then call us with the nearest junction. Junctions on the moor are far apart, so the number on the nearest blue driver location sign helps a lot.

Can you recover vans and light commercial vehicles from the M62?
