Scotland's main east–west motorway

The M8 starts at Hermiston Gait on the western edge of Edinburgh, close to the city bypass, and runs west past Livingston, Harthill and Coatbridge into Glasgow. It crosses the city centre, passes Glasgow Airport and continues west towards Greenock. It's a commuter road at both ends and one of the main freight routes in central Scotland, so it's busy almost all day.

Edinburgh to Harthill (junctions 1–5)

The eastern section runs through West Lothian past Livingston and Bathgate. It's relatively open, with long gaps between some junctions, so Harthill services (roughly halfway between the two cities) is a common reference point. In winter this higher ground can see snow and ice when the cities are clear.

Into Glasgow (junctions 6–15)

West of Harthill the M8 passes Newhouse and meets the M73 at Baillieston on the eastern side of Glasgow, then heads into the city past Easterhouse and the Royal Infirmary. Traffic builds sharply on this approach at peak times, and lanes merge and split quickly at each junction.

The city centre and the Kingston Bridge (junctions 15–21)

Through central Glasgow the M8 runs in cuttings and on elevated sections past Charing Cross, then crosses the River Clyde on the Kingston Bridge, one of the busiest road bridges in Europe. Junctions here come in quick succession, some exits leave from the right-hand lane, and there's almost no hard shoulder. If you break down in this section, put your hazards on straight away and tell us which side of the river you're on and which junction you last passed.

Glasgow Airport and the west (junctions 22–31)

West of the Kingston Bridge the M8 meets the M77 and the M74 extension, then passes Paisley and Glasgow Airport (junction 28) before running along the Clyde towards Bishopton and Langbank. If you've broken down on the way to catch a flight, tell us when you call: we can take the car somewhere safe while you carry on.

If you break down on the M8: pull as far left as you can, onto the hard shoulder if there is one, and put your hazard lights on. If it's safe, get out by the left-hand door and wait behind the barrier. In the city centre, where there's often no hard shoulder, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999 if you're stopped in a live lane. Then call us with your junction and direction.

Questions

M8 Breakdown FAQs

I've broken down on the Kingston Bridge. What should I do?

Put your hazard lights on immediately. There's very little room to stop on the bridge, so if you're in a live lane and can't get out safely, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999. Once the vehicle can be moved safely, call us and we'll arrange recovery.

Do you cover the M8 at the Edinburgh end as well as Glasgow?

Yes. We arrange recovery along the whole M8, from Hermiston Gait at Edinburgh, past Harthill and through Glasgow to Glasgow Airport and beyond.

How do I tell you where I am on the M8?

Give us the last junction or services you passed, your direction (eastbound towards Edinburgh or westbound towards Glasgow) and the number on the nearest blue driver location sign if you can see one. You can also share your live location with us on WhatsApp.
