Breakdown Recovery on the M25

The M25 circles London for about 117 miles and is one of the busiest motorways in Europe. If you've broken down on it, call us with your junction, whether you're going clockwise or anticlockwise, and we'll send a local recovery operator to you.

Clockwise or anticlockwise matters

On a ring road, "north" and "south" don't mean much. What matters is whether you were travelling clockwise or anticlockwise, and the last junction you passed. The M25's junctions are numbered clockwise from the Dartford Crossing (junction 1a in Kent) round to junction 31 in Essex. The motorway meets almost every major route out of London, including the M20, M23, M3, M4, M40, M1, A1(M) and M11, so the busy interchanges are good reference points.

The Dartford Crossing

Strictly speaking, the Dartford Crossing isn't part of the M25: it's the A282, joining the two ends of the motorway across the Thames. Clockwise (southbound) traffic uses the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and anticlockwise (northbound) traffic uses the tunnels. The crossing has its own traffic officers, who deal with breakdowns on the bridge and in the tunnels and move vehicles to a safe place. If that happens to you, call us from there and we'll arrange onward recovery to your garage or home.

Heathrow and the west (junctions 10–16)

The western side of the M25 is among the most congested stretches of motorway in the country. It passes the A3 at Wisley (junction 10), the M3 (junction 12), Heathrow (junctions 14 and 15), the M4 (junction 15) and the M40 (junction 16). Queues build quickly here after any incident, so getting fully out of the running lanes and behind the barrier is especially important.

The north and east (junctions 17–31)

North of London the M25 passes Watford and meets the M1 at junction 21, then the A1(M) at South Mimms (junction 23), where there's a large service area. It continues east past Enfield and Waltham Abbey, meets the M11 at junction 27 and swings south through Essex to Thurrock and the Dartford approach.

Kent and Surrey (junctions 2–9)

South of the river, the M25 runs through Kent and Surrey past Swanley, Sevenoaks (where the M26 splits off), Clacket Lane services, Reigate and the M23 towards Gatwick (junction 7), and Leatherhead. This southern side has long stretches between junctions, so the services and driver location signs are especially helpful for pinpointing where you are.

If you break down on the M25: move as far left as you can, ideally onto a hard shoulder or into an emergency area. Turn your hazard lights on, get out by the left-hand door if it's safe and wait behind the barrier. If you can't leave the vehicle safely, stay in it with your seatbelt on and call 999. Then call us with your junction and whether you were travelling clockwise or anticlockwise.

Smart motorway sections

Much of the M25 is now smart motorway, with variable speed limits and, on some stretches, no permanent hard shoulder. Look for emergency areas (orange surface, SOS sign) and watch the overhead gantries for a red X. Our guide to breaking down on a smart motorway explains exactly what to do.

M25 Breakdown FAQs

How do I tell you where I am on the M25?

Tell us the last junction you passed, whether you were going clockwise or anticlockwise, and the number on the nearest blue driver location sign if you can see one. Sharing your live location on WhatsApp is the quickest way of all.

I've broken down on the Dartford Crossing. What happens?

The Dartford Crossing has its own traffic officers who move broken-down vehicles off the bridge and out of the tunnels to a safe place. Once your vehicle is somewhere safe, call us and we'll arrange recovery from there to your garage or home.

Can you recover vans as well as cars from the M25?

Yes. We arrange recovery for cars, vans and light commercial vehicles. Tell us the make, model and roughly how heavily loaded the van is, so we send a suitable recovery vehicle.
