The city centre and the Low Emission Zone
Glasgow's city centre is built on a grid, with plenty of one-way streets, bus gates and pedestrian areas around Buchanan Street, George Square and the Merchant City. The centre is also a Low Emission Zone, where vehicles that don't meet the emission standards can be fined for driving in. A breakdown inside the zone isn't something to worry about in the moment, but tell us where the car needs to go so we can plan around it.
The M8 and the Kingston Bridge
Unusually for a UK city, Glasgow has a motorway running right through its centre. The M8 passes Charing Cross in a deep cutting and crosses the Clyde on the Kingston Bridge, one of the busiest bridges in Europe. Junctions come thick and fast, some exits leave from the right-hand lane, and there's very little room to stop. If you break down here, hazards on, stay in the car with your seatbelt on if you're in a live lane, and call 999 if you're in danger.
The M74, M77 and M80
Several motorways fan out from the city. The M74 heads south-east towards Hamilton and on to England, the M77 runs south towards Kilmarnock and Ayr, and the M80 goes north towards Stirling. When you call from one of them, tell us the motorway, the nearest junction and your direction of travel.
The Clyde Tunnel and steep streets
The Clyde Tunnel links Govan and Whiteinch under the river. If you break down inside it, the tunnel staff will respond and move the car to a safe place. Call us once you're out. Glasgow also has some very steep streets, particularly around Garnethill, Partick and parts of the West End, so tell us about the slope if you've stopped on one.
Broken down on a busy Glasgow road? Hazard lights on, then get yourself and any passengers onto the pavement or behind a barrier, away from traffic. Call us with the street, the nearest junction or landmark and which way you were heading.
Around Glasgow
We cover the whole city and the surrounding area, including Paisley, Renfrew, Clydebank, Bearsden, Rutherglen, East Kilbride, Hamilton and Motherwell. Breakdowns at Glasgow Airport, Braehead or the retail parks along the motorways are no problem: just tell us exactly where you are.
