From Glasgow to the border

The M74 begins on the south side of Glasgow, near the M8 and the Kingston Bridge, and runs south-east past Rutherglen, Uddingston, Hamilton and Motherwell. Beyond Abington the road continues as the A74(M), with the same motorway rules, all the way to Gretna, where it becomes the M6 into England.

The Glasgow end

Around Glasgow the motorway is busy with commuter and freight traffic, with interchanges for the M73 and M8 and the services at Hamilton and Bothwell. If you break down here, tell us the junction number and whether you're heading towards Glasgow or the south.

Beattock Summit and the Southern Uplands

South of Abington the road crosses the Southern Uplands and climbs over Beattock Summit, over 1,000 feet up. In winter, snow, ice and strong winds are common, and the area is remote, with long gaps between junctions and few towns. Abington and Annandale Water services and the towns of Moffat and Lockerbie are the main landmarks.

If you break down on the M74 or A74(M): get onto the hard shoulder, hazards on, and if it's safe get out by the left-hand door and wait behind the barrier. Take warm clothes with you in winter. If you can't get out safely, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999. Then call us with the junctions either side of you.
